Second Chance for Horses
Second Career Equine Foundation
We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, retraining, rehoming, and retiring thoroughbred horses and providing them with shelter, food, and veterinary care in a safe and loving environment.
Giving Horses a Second Chance
Second Career Equine Foundation was born out of love for thoroughbred horses and a desire to provide them with a second chance at life. Our journey began 8 years ago when we adopted our first off-the-track thoroughbred. Our first thoroughbred’s name is Sixbits and he injured his right rear leg and was no longer able to race. He received veterinary care and rehabilitation. After he was fully recovered he was retrained to be a dressage and trail riding horse. Today, he enjoys his life with many friends on a beautiful farm in a safe, and loving environment. We aim to provide this opportunity to other off-the-track thoroughbreds in need of a new home.

Comprehensive Equine Care
At Second Career Equine Foundation, we aim to provide a broad range of services designed to give off-the-track thoroughbreds a second career and a second chance at a meaningful and happy life. Our services are about providing comprehensive care that includes rehabilitation, retraining, rehoming, and retirement. We ensure that all horses under our care receive the necessary shelter, food, and veterinary care while living in a safe environment with horse friends and people who love them.

Rescue
Our rescue services are the first step in our mission. We identify horses in need, often those who have been injured or are no longer able to race, and bring them into our care. This involves coordinating with various stakeholders, ensuring a safe and stress-free transition for the horse, and providing immediate medical attention if needed.

Rehabilitation
Once a horse is under our care, we work with local veterinary professionals and horse care experts to provide comprehensive rehabilitation services as needed. This includes medical care for any injuries or health issues, as well as emotional support to help the horse recover from any trauma. Our goal is to help each horse regain their health and happiness.

Retraining
Retraining is a crucial part of our mission. We believe that every horse has potential, and our job is to help them realize it. Our retraining program involves assessing each horse’s skills and temperament and then providing them with training that suits their abilities and interests. For example, a former racehorse might be retrained in hunting/ jumping, dressage, trail riding and/or as a therapy horse.

Rehoming and Retirement
When the horse is ready, we find them a loving new home where they can live out their days in peace and happiness. For those horses who are not suitable for rehoming, we provide a comfortable and caring retirement. We ensure that all horses, whether they are rehomed or retired, receive the ongoing care and love they deserve.

We work closely with passionate individuals who are experts in their respective fields. Our horses are surrounded by horse loving care experts who handle their daily care and who all are committed to providing the best possible care for our horses. We recognize the importance of nutrition for equine health and ensure that the feeding practices and dietary adjustments are included in the personalized care plan that addresses the unique needs of each horse. Additionally, our horses receive veterinary and farrier care regularly which also play an essential role in the well-being and optimal performance of each horse.
Training
We believe that every horse has potential, and our job is to help them realize it. Our retraining program involves assessing each horse’s skills and temperament and then providing them with training that suits their abilities and interests.

Sixbits
Sixbits was retrained in dressage and trail riding because of his previous rear leg injury, jumping was not recommended. He really took to dressage and loves the chance to go to shows. Sixbits is really outgoing and enjoys the interaction with the other horses at the shows.
Jake
Jake just started his training which is very broad for now. He appears to enjoy jumping and trails riding and might be retrained in hunting/ jumping.

Tater
Tater is our latest addition and he really is a very special boy. Tater is really sensitive and will hug you and snuggle-up with you when you are having a bad day. Tater also just started his training and he absolutely loves trails rides and mud. Because of his unique personality he might be retrained as a therapy horse.
Love and Commitment
At the heart of everything we do is a deep love for horses and a commitment to their well-being. We believe that every horse deserves a second chance at life, and we are committed to making that happen. Every horse we rescue becomes a part of our family, and we are dedicated to their happiness and well-being. Whether it’s providing medical care, training, or simply spending time with our horses, we do it all with love and commitment.
